City, Oh, My City

Last night at writing group we did a quick, 10-minute write called, "City, Oh, My City" - which I translated to "County, Oh, My County". Because Dusty Rose does not live in the city. I'm putting it here as a reminder to myself to clean it up and flesh it out a little bit. Again, this was a quick one.

CHESTER COUNTY, OH, MY CHESTER COUNTY

Home of Eddie Arnold, Walking Tall and Dusty Rose,
Dixie Youth, an Annual BBQ Festival, and Freed-Hardeman University

Home of Bells Drive-In, voted best burger in Tennessee,
and the drive-thru nativity at First Baptist

Where Footloose, the movie, could have been filmed,
yet the dances go on.

Where elections were based on whiskey
and barters

Where all the trucks have gun racks
and the cars have big tires

Where noodling is illegal
and NASCAR stands tall

Where the funeral home has an info line
and the county paper tells all.

writing (or not)

Seems like I have nothing of significance to post these days. I have been writing on a pretty regular basis, just don't have anything I'm ready to stick out here. Lots of grief writing and such. Hard work, but nothing to share yet. I expect some stories and essays to come of it in the future. For now, mostly mindless stuff on here.

So go outside. Dig in the dirt. Keep fresh flowers in your house. Support your local farmers market. Go lay in a hammock and read a book. Sit on the porch and enjoy your morning coffee. Have a cigarette on the back deck. Build something with your hands. Read the Sunday New York Times. Check back later for words of substance.

What I'm listening to these days:
- Coldplay, Viva la Vida (or Death and All His Friends)
- The Weepies, Hideaway
- Sigur Ros, Hvarf-Heim
- Emmylou Harris, All I Intended to Be
- The Juno Soundtrack

And you?

book meme

I received this meme from my friend Jenny as the result of loaning her the book she quoted from on her blog. So, here goes.

Step One – pull out a book on the book shelf.
Step Two – go to page 123.
Step Three – read and write out the 5th sentence.
Step Four – tag 5 more people.

From one of my current reads, David Sedaris' When You Are Engulfed in Flames: "Or maybe they'll run into something comparatively small yet no less astonishing."

I think sentence 5 on page 124 would be more intriguing: "A goblet will keep you going for years, while a man in his underpants is good for maybe two days, a week at the most."

If you haven't played yet, consider yourself tagged.
